Moment after heat

Last night, as the scorching heat finally began to ease, I sat in the lounge and bawled my eyes out.

An overflow of emotions washed over me; tears felt like the most sensible way to let it all drain away.

I felt the suffering of animals in the heat. I worried about a friend who hadn’t yet recovered from a fall. I was humbled by the kindness shown by clients, and weighed down by concern for a homeless cat that had just secured temporary shelter.

For that moment, I sat in my lounge room, surrounded by things I had created—things lovely to look at—aware that I am lucky enough to have plenty, despite all the adversities I’ve faced myself. It all became too overwhelming, and I had to cry.

Then, after a restless sleep, I rushed downstairs to rescue a frog my cat had brought in—sometime, maybe yesterday, I guess,—caught it with my bare hands, and released it into the back garden.

There’s never a dull moment in life.

Hard to part…

Another trip was done.

It was, once again, a wonderful getaway—just as it always seems to be.

All those beautiful spots for sightseeing, the pampering soaks in hot springs, the quiet pleasure of driving alone—it was all good, all deeply satisfying.

More and more these days, I find it hard to part from my travels. Not because of the holiday mood, or even the road trips themselves, but because of the human connections I happen upon along the way.

Those fleeting conversations, those warm exchanges—sometimes they bring tears to my eyes after saying good-bye. I know there may never be another chance to board the same bus, share the same moment, with those people again.

But life moves on, new destinations await.

And so, I keep going…
